Upcoming major esports competitions in 2020
Upcoming major esports tournaments of 2020
The schedule of esports events until the end of 2020 is bursting at the seams with the number of competitions. We have decided to highlight a few championships that esports fans should keep an eye on.
The International
The International is one of the largest esports tournaments in the world. It broke its own record as the most profitable sporting event with a prize pool of over $34,437,000 this year, and that number continues to grow. Dota 2 developer Valve postponed the event indefinitely this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The delay was announced in April. Valve has not yet announced a new date, and it is unclear if the tournament will take place in 2020. Winnings in international competitions are accumulated from the sale of Dota 2 battle passes priced at $9.99. Players can pay $29.35 to unlock an additional 50 levels, or $44.99 to jump 100 levels at once. These passes reward players with in-game prizes and items as they level up. A quarter of the revenue from battle pass purchases goes into the tournament prize pool. So, as long as players continue to buy them, the pool will keep growing. Valve previously announced that seasonal battle passes will be available until September 19.
OMEGA League
The Russian company Epic Esports Events (mainly known for organizing major competitions in Eastern Europe like EPICENTER) has organized a large online tournament called OMEGA League with a prize pool of $650,000 and the participation of teams from around the world. The tournament, which includes representatives from «hit» teams like Team Liquid, Nigma, NiP, and Team Secret, will conclude on September 6, 2020.
IEM New York 2020
The start of IEM New York 2020 for CS: GO Online is set for October 6. In the tournaments for America and the CIS region, 12 teams will compete for prizes of $60,000 and $50,000 respectively. The prize pool for the European championship will be $140,000, divided among eight teams invited by the organizers — to be announced later.
In the RMR tournaments, participants will play in groups of six teams in a double elimination format. The top three teams will advance to the playoffs, where they will compete in a single-elimination format. RMR series tournaments serve as qualifying rounds for the Major in Brazil. ESL One Rio 2020 was initially scheduled to take place from May 11 to 24 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is now planned to begin on November 9.

The autumn series of BLAST Premier will run from October 22 to November 4, and the Showdown will be held from November 23 to 29. The final part of the autumn series is scheduled for December 8–13. The tournament operator plans to hold it in an offline format if the situation with the coronavirus pandemic allows.
The previous season of BLAST Premier was held on LAN, but the Showdown Championship and the final stage were conducted online. After that, tournaments were held separately in Europe and America.
Gaming League Azerbaijan (GLA)
The largest online PUBG Mobile Championship will take place from September 1 to 21. PUBG Mobile (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) has become one of the most popular games in recent years and has been part of the esports scene since 2017. Initially a computer game, PUBG was later integrated into phones and tablets. The main objective of the game is to stay alive and neutralize the opponent. The game can be played individually or in teams. The tournament will feature 512 teams representing various regions of the country. Each team consists of two players. According to the championship regulations, the teams will be divided into 16 groups of 32 each. All teams in their group will compete on three different maps. At the end of 18 days of competition, the top 2 teams from each group will advance to the grand final.
ESL One Rio 2020
Team Vitality previously defeated BIG and advanced to the grand final of cs_summit 6 for Europe, where they will face the winner of the BIG — OG pair. In case of defeat, Richard Schok Papillon’s team will receive 1875 RMR points, while the champion team will receive 2000 RMR points. Regardless of the outcome of the deciding match, Vitality will secure a slot in the Major if it maintains its current roster.
ESL One Rio 2020 is scheduled for November 9-22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 24 teams will compete in the $2 million tournament, and the final stage of the competition will take place at the Olympic Arena in Rio, which can accommodate up to 18,000 spectators.
